What is floppy disk?

A floppy disk is a small magnetic disk. It is also called floppy diskette or as floppy. It was once called mini-disk as well. It is called floppy disk because it flops on waving it. Floppy disks are portable. You can easily remove them from a disk drive. The disk drives for floppy disk are called floppy drives.

A floppy disk is a type of storage media. It is capable of storing electronic data, like computer files. Floppy disks are slower in accessing data as compare to other hard disks and have less storage capacity. But floppy disks are less expensive.

Types/Size of Floppy disk:

Floppy disk commonly came in three different sizes.

  • 8 inches
  • 5 inches
  • 5 inches

The floppy disk is becoming, even more, smaller due to the advancement in the technology. The latest version of a floppy disk (3.5 inches) can hold more data from the previous models. The decrease in the size of the floppy disk also decreased the size of the floppy disk driver.

Floppy disk drives have four basic components:

The following are the basic components of the floppy disk drive.

  1. Magnetic read/write heads (one or two):

It can read both sides of a disk, and the same head is used for reading and writing.

  1. A spindle clamping device:

It holds the disk in the place and spins 300 to 360 rotations per minute.

  1. A-frame with levers:

It opens and closes the device.

  1. A circuit board:

It contains all of the electronics.

Types of floppy disk drives:

There are many types some of them are given here.

  1. 5 1/4 -Inch Drives

5 1/4 -inch floppy disk was common for the personal computer. It can store between 360 kilobytes and 1.2 megabytes of data.

  1. 3 1/2 -Inch Drive

3 1/2 -inch floppy disk drive is considered a floppy drive because the diskette uses a magnetic floppy disk that is encased in plastic. It can store 730 kilobytes on a double density disk and 1.44 megabytes on a high-density disk.

  1. Zip Drive

It was introduced by the Iomega Corporation in the 1990s. It can store 100 megabytes, 250 megabytes and even 750 megabytes on a single disk.

Floppy disk advantages and disadvantages:

The following are Floppy disk advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of a floppy disk:

  • It is small and lightweight.
  • It allows random access to data.
  • It is useful in transferring files between computers.
  • All kinds of data, private or public can be stored on the floppy disk.
  • It can store private data more securely so that other users on a network cannot gain access to it.
  • It is very small.
  • It is easy to carry.
  • It is cheap.
  • It can be used many times.

Disadvantages of a floppy disk:

Nothing is perfect in the world. They have drawbacks on the basis of their use, price, size and many other things. So floppy desk also have some disdvantages given below.

  • It is easily destroyed by dust and dirt.
  • Its storage capacity is limited.
  • It is difficult to handle.
  • It is more prone to data loss.
  • It is easily damaged.
  • Nowadays computers do not have floppy disk drives.
  • It can transform a virus from one machine to another.
