What is Ring Topology?

It is called a ring topology because its computers are connected in a way that it forms a ring. Ring topology uses repeaters to send data. It is because if someone wants to send data to 100 nodes. The data has to pass through 99 nodes to reach the 100th.

So, to prevent data loss, ring topology uses repeaters. In-ring topology the transmission is unidirectional. It is bidirectional as it has two connections between each network node. It is then called Dual Ring Topology. In dual-ring topology, two networks are formed.

Data flows in the opposite direction in them. If one ring fails the other can be used as its backup. To reach the destination node, data has to pass through all the other nodes that come in its way.

Advantages of ring topology

Advantages of ring topology:

Here you can see ring topology advantages.

  • Only the node, having token transmits data.
  • If traffic is high, the performance is not affected.
  • Adding new nodes is possible.
  • Adding new nodes will also not affect performance.
  • Ring topology is cheap to install.
  • Ring topology is easy and cheap to expand.

Disadvantages of ring topology:

The following are some disadvantages of topology.

  • In-ring topology, it is difficult to troubleshoot.
  • Adding a new computer disturbs network activity.
  • Removing a new computer disturbs network activity.
  • If one node fails, it disturbs the entire network.
